Carova isn't a town so much as a decision. There are no paved roads — you reach it by driving the beach north from where Route 12 ends in Corolla, 4WD required, tides consulted. The wild horses that made the area famous walk through yards and down the sand lanes. Its 241 rentals run 4–6 bedrooms, and every one of them requires you to haul groceries in over the sand. That's the price of genuine isolation, and the people who choose it consider it a bargain.
