Kitty Hawk is the working end of the northern OBX — smaller houses, lower prices, and a location that puts everything within easy reach: 10 miles from Nags Head, minutes from the bridge, groceries and errands on US-158. It's less resort-y than Duck or Corolla, and that's the point. Groups who care more about beach time than house theatrics tend to land here and come back.

Access & character note: The Wright brothers' first flight is named for Kitty Hawk because of the weather station that handled their telegrams — the actual flight site and memorial are just south in what's now Kill Devil Hills.
