NC-12 ends here. Hatteras Village is the southernmost settlement on the island, about 42 miles from Nags Head, and keeps a working-waterfront character: charter boats, fishing culture, and a local feel that the northern beaches lost decades ago. It's also the largest rental market on the island, and the jumping-off point for Ocracoke.
Best for
- Fishing and charter trips
- Ocracoke day trips
- Remote-feel seekers
- Groups wanting range in house size and price
Not ideal for
- Travelers who want to be central on the island
- Short first-timer trips
Access & character note: The free NC-operated Hatteras–Ocracoke ferry departs from the village — roughly a 45–60 minute crossing, no reservation needed, on a seasonal schedule.
